Review: Bright Side by Kim Holden

SYNOPSIS:bright-side

Secrets.
Everyone has one.
Some are bigger than others.
And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

Kate Sedgwick’s life has been anything but typical. She’s endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there’s a reason her best friend Gus calls her Bright Side). Kate is strong-willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She’s also never believed in love. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with Keller Banks.

They both feel it.
But they each have a reason to fight it.
They each have a secret.

And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

REVIEW:

This book…ugh this book gutted me in the most hauntingly beautiful way. I have been avoiding reading Bright Side for a while because I knew it was going to carve out a hole in my heart and take up residency there, and true to the warnings I have received, it did just that. This book was painfully exquisite, from the relate-able down to Earth characters, to the healing and breaking of my own heart, it was perfection.

Kate Sedgwick is an enchanting enigma. She was a puzzle I wanted to solve but I didn’t quite have all the pieces and even when I thought I had her figured out, she threw me a curve ball. Keller, Keller, Keller, how I love you so. He had such a big heart and his secret, oh his secret had me smiling with hope. Keller gave me hope. Gus was strong and fragile, funny and pained, and I am so concerned for him as I close the final pages of this book.

This story was flawless, I loved everything about it. I would say the only thing I didn’t like about it was the fact that the last 30-35 pages was spent in a state of sobbing and me telling myself not to sob. So many tender moments shared in such rapid succession, my heart of filling up and breaking down with the turn of each page. It was truly phenomenal read and now I understand what all the hype was for, because this book truly lives up and excels the hype surrounding it.
