Review: The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia

SYNOPSIS:the-lovely-reckless

I’ve become an expert at avoiding things that could hurt me—which means I will figure out how to stay away from Marco Leone.

Seventeen-year-old Frankie Devereux would do anything to forget the past. Haunted by the memory of her boyfriend’s death, she lives her life by one dangerous rule: Nothing matters. At least, that’s what Frankie tells herself after a reckless mistake forces her to leave her privileged life in the Heights to move in with her dad—an undercover cop. She transfers to a public high school in the Downs, where fistfights don’t faze anyone and illegal street racing is more popular than football.

Marco Leone is the fastest street racer in the Downs. Tough, sexy, and hypnotic, he makes it impossible for Frankie to ignore him—and how he makes her feel. But the risks Marco takes for his family could have devastating consequences for them both. When Frankie discovers his secret, she has to make a choice. Will she let the pain of the past determine her future? Or will she risk what little she has left to follow her heart?

I don’t think words can accurately portray how much I loved this book, hands down one of my top reads of the year! I was thrown into the world of street racing, undercover cops, and mysterious tattooed hotties and I never wanted to leave. This story was captivating, from Frankie’s journey of self-discovery to Marco’s path of destruction, I wanted more! I couldn’t put the book down and read it in a day…it was delicious.

Kami Garcia excels at writing relate-able characters, their raw emotions, both good and bad, are tangible feelings that burrow deep into my heart and stay with me long after the last page. Frankie is truly carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders and her parents are honestly horrendous. They suck at being parents and are really just financial support at best. Towards the end they do redeem themselves but they both still have a long way to go. Frankie on the other hand, really grew and developed throughout the book into a confident, self-assured, no bull-sh*t woman.

Marco was gorgeous, sexy, rough around the edges, and everything I want in a bad-boy. The ending, when the killer is revealed, really threw me for a curve ball. I loved how action packed the story was. There was the perfect balance of sweet and sexy of cute and dangerous to combine for this power packed book. Just do me a favor and go get yourself a copy because you will not be disappointed!
