Review: Where the Road Takes Me by Jay McLean
Chloe has one plan for the future, and one plan only: the road. She’s made a promise to herself: don’t let anyone in, and don’t let anyone love her. She’s learned the hard way what happens if she breaks her rules. So she’s focused on being invisible and waiting until she can set out on the road—her dream of freedom, at least for a little while.
Blake Hunter is a basketball star who has it all—everything about him looks perfect to those on the other side of his protective walls. He can’t let anyone see the shattered pieces behind the flawless facade or else all his hopes and dreams will disappear.
One dark night throws Chloe and Blake together, changing everything for Blake. For Chloe, nothing changes: she has the road, and she’s focused on it. But when the so-called perfect boy starts to notice the invisible girl, they discover that sometimes with love, no one knows where the road may lead.
REVIEW:
This book was 4 fire-trucking stars! It was a great read from start to finish and I read the Epilogue with batted breath and tears in my eyes. So lets start at the beginning, the story takes you through a journey of epic losses and trying to find yourself and fight death.
Chloe is brash and has moments of reckless, abandonment while Blake is a stoic voice of reason. It’s easy to see why Chloe is encased in a protective bubble, she doesn’t want to hurt others but this is where I couldn’t give the story 5-stars. *Spoiler if you haven’t read the story yet.* Breast cancer runs in my family, you can’t just look at your breasts or feel a lump and suddenly you know you have cancer. Cancer isn’t black and white and for me Chloe did one self-exam and she knew she had cancer and this bothered me.
So aside from that bit, I really enjoyed to story, up till the ending where you don’t know who dies and who lives. You learn to love and heal through the losses and you learn that people come into your life to help you mend broken relationships, don’t be afraid to open up to others or you might just miss your own red-letter day.
