This book left me wanting more…in both a good and bad way. So allow me to begin divulging my thoughts on the good, bad, and ugly of Zero Day. As always, the story starts off within the first 50 pages with a ton of name dropping. I think by now we all know how I feel about a lot of names being thrown at me at once…I detest it. I spent those early pages referencing previous pages…Was that this person? What was her sister’s name? What was that guys name again? Is that the same person that I just read about 2 chapters ago? It takes me a while to adjust and get sorted whose-who in my head.
Once that happens and I accept this, I started to enjoy the story. The characters are rich and complex, the relationships are complicated, and the thrill and twists left me wanting more. I really can’t talk about the plot without spoilers but I enjoyed it. While unrealistic, it was fun and definitely brought something unique to the YA market. Darrow holds a soft spot in my heart and I am still on the fence about Addie. While she is can of worms waiting to come undone, she seems to have a split personality. I wanted to yell at her and hug her at the same time. She could be caring and sweet or a devoid of emotion.
In the end, I definitely enjoyed the story, who doesn’t like political thrillers? I love the suspense element and was pleasantly surprised to find that there may be another book…the ending definitely left it open for more. I wanted to flip the page and this is exactly what I want to see in a debut author’s story. If Jan is intriguing me now, imagine how amazing future books will be.

Jan Gangsei grew up in small-town Vermont, reading Nancy Drew mysteries, putting on backyard shows with her best friend and dreaming about exploring the world. After college, she landed a job as a newspaper reporter covering politics and the police beat, and was astonished to discover she could actually get paid to write and tell stories. Since then, she’s lived in Key West, New York City, DC and Barbados. She’s now settled with her family in northern Virginia, where she writes full time with a cup of hazelnut coffee in one hand and a Jack Russell terrier named Watson curled under her legs.
