Review: Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor

SYNOPSIS:Days of Blood and Starlight

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a world free of bloodshed and war.

This is not that world.

Art student and monster’s apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

While Karou and her allies build a monstrous army in a land of dust and starlight, Akiva wages a different sort of battle: a battle for redemption. For hope.

But can any hope be salvaged from the ashes of their broken dream?

REVIEW:

I have a serious love-hate relationship with this novel, which I is what I expected since the first one blew me away, it was unfortunate that its sequel did not. I wanted to love this story but what made the first book so enchanting was the exotic locations and the span and strength of Karou and Akiva’s relationship. This book I had to deal with Karou being an emotional b*tch and Akiva desperately hoping for redemption and forgiveness and it p*ssed me off.

I understand having her be upset for the beginning of the book but that fact that her residual rage continued even after a huge revelation is revealed enraged me. I was annoyed and fed up with Karou by the end of this book. I also didn’t like how there was an attempt to bring in another love instrest, sorry Ziri you never stood a chance so you are going to need to back the f*ck up.

The only grace in this book is Thiago…well at least what happens to him. I won’t spoil it but sweet baby Jesus waiting 80% of the book for that one moment was so very worth it. The ending gives me a glimmer of hope. With the brink of the last major battle of the war beginning, let me hope that the final book can redeem what this book lost for me. Also, please will someone kill Razgut…seriously, why has he not died! Annoying, evil blob. Rant over.
