Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
REVIEW:
This is going to be a hybrid review, due in part to I listened to the audiobook and then read the last half of the book because I realized I could read faster than it could read it to me. The audiobook and the story as a whole is magical perfection! Seriously…why the heck did I wait so long to read this/start this series?! I love it, loved it, and I already started book two, The Elite. America is a unique character who is strong and on a journey to self-discovery. She is fiery, passionate, and growing as a young woman page-by-page.
Aspen is a thorn in my side that won’t be pruned, I loathe him and want, desperately, to punch him in his pretty face. Prince Maxon…obviously where my true love and intentions lie, is everything…EVERYTHING! He is charming, witty, naive, handsome, I could go on for days, just take my word on all the swoon. The world is captivating, addictive, and fascinating. I love the complexity of it and how even when everything is falling apart around them, there is still hope for love to blossom.
I loved the uniqueness to the story, which has been compared to several other well known series. I find that The Selection is not only strong enough, but unique enough that it deserves to stand and shine on its own. It is enthralling and I honestly couldn’t put it down/didn’t want it to end. I think I found my new favorite series!
