Review: How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather
SYNOPSIS:
Salem, Massachusetts is the site of the infamous witch trials and the new home of Samantha Mather. Recently transplanted from New York City, Sam and her stepmother are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Sam is the descendant of Cotton Mather, one of the men responsible for those trials and almost immediately, she becomes the enemy of a group of girls who call themselves The Descendants. And guess who their ancestors were?
If dealing with that weren’t enough, Sam also comes face to face with a real live (well technically dead) ghost. A handsome, angry ghost who wants Sam to stop touching his stuff. But soon Sam discovers she is at the center of a centuries old curse affecting anyone with ties to the trials. Sam must come to terms with the ghost and find a way to work with the Descendants to stop a deadly cycle that has been going on since the first accused witch was hanged. If any town should have learned its lesson, it’s Salem. But history may be about to repeat itself.

This book was light, fun, and unique. I haven’t read a book recently, I have been in a a reading rut but this book dug me out. In a flooded young adult market, How to Hang a Witch is completely one of a kind, I haven’t come across anything like it. It was rich in the history of Salem, a world in which I am completely unfamiliar with but captivated by! They mystery surround the story was intriguing and a puzzle I was desperately trying to solve and I probably didn’t correctly guess how it would all play out till about 75-80% into the story. I love a mystery that maintains the mystery!
Now lets back it on up and talk about our characters. Samantha is a hot mess, and adorable, stubborn, mess. I love how here life is complete chaos, she is like a tornado where ever she goes. Then there is Elijah, cue the swoon. Elijah is the ghost referenced in the synopsis and he is dreamy and sweet and everything I want…except living. Just a minor detail though, really he is perfection! The story really blends seamlessly and my only complaint is I would have liked more drama in the beginning. Overall, I have all the components of a perfect young adult book, teenage drama, romance, angst, tension, and a definite must read around Halloween.
