Review: Breathe by Abbi Glines
SYNOPSIS:
Sadie White’s summer job is at the beach, but she won’t be working as a lifeguard. Since her mom is pregnant and refuses to work, Sadie will be taking over as a domestic servant for a wealthy family on a nearby island.

REVIEW:
I wanted to love this book, and for the most part I did, but there were 2 crucial scenes that knocked this book down from perfection for me. First, let me tell you what I loved, the cast. The characters are colorful and diverse. Abbi Glines writes both characters like Jax, whom I swoon over and fall head over heels for, as well as characters like Jessica, whom I want to punch in the face repeatedly because they are just truly awful. I liked the determination and passion in Sadie, I found her relate-able…she wants to be more than the small town she lives in and her dead-beat mom. That type of determination in a teenager is admirable. It’s also an important life lesson to learn that you can’t take on the world alone and eventually you are going to reach a breaking point where you have to ask for help.
In contrast, there was insta-love…which normally doesn’t bother me but there wasn’t even a build up to the romance here. It was like Sadie spent a day with Jax and boom, she loves him and is confessing it to the masses. Then there is another scene where Sadie has her first orgasm and it was just simply awkward. I was uncomfortable reading it for two reasons. Foremost, I need a build up in characters, and the development of Jax and Sadie’s relationship was just not there, they hadn’t spent enough time together, or even enough intimate moments together for him to be doing this like this. Secondly, the scene was awkward, it was just, in my opinion, not well written. As in I was extremely uncomfortable and almost stopped reading the book because there was literally 5-10 pages of awkward first orgasm description. I am cringing as I write this but it is an important disclaimer that you all should know.
That being said, I am a firm believer in giving the second book a chance because I find that authors either improve or falter on the second book and there remainder of the series plays out like so. Therefore, I will be reading the second book and my thoughts on that are to come!
