Review: Hiders by Meg Collett
SYNOPSIS:
Violet Relend is called the Ghost of Canaan Island because of her white hair and eerie eyes.
Though they mock her, Violet helps the citizens of Canaan with her family’s dwindling fortune. When she purchases a prosthetic for Arie Mendoza, a wounded soldier fresh from war, he insists on paying her back.
Wanting only to be left alone, Violet gives Arie a list of twelve impossible tasks. As she reluctantly gets to know him, the grip her fears and anxieties have on her loosens—until a developer threatens to have her crumbling, cliff-side house condemned. Violet will need more than Arie’s help to save her home. The entire town will have to rally around their Ghost.
If Violet doesn’t move fast enough, the walls of her carefully constructed life will fall in around her and drag her into the ocean’s depths.

This book was a lovely read and while it is not a burdening or heavy story, it is just enough to touch my heart, leave me smiling, and wanting more. I have been following Meg Collett since the beginning or her writing journey and this book has shown just how far she has grown as an author. She really tapped into the true, raw emotions of Violet and Arie. Violet has anxiety and Arie is coping with survivor guilt and through each other they find the strength to heal themselves. You see how Violet is almost rotting away because her anxiety prevents her from progressing and watching her accept that she needs to do something to get better is a beautiful journey of self-discovery.
It is also a story about how life changes and people change. It shows you that love can also change with you. Love can grow and flow with the changes but still remain. I wanted to hug Arie after hearing his backstory and learning about his struggles, I personally have friends in the military and Meg poignantly portrays the struggles of post-military life. It goes far beyond finds a job, its about finding yourself.
I think my only pet-peeve about this story is that the ending left me wanting more and I would have liked to see a little slower progression in the build up between Violet and Arie. I felt like they were tip-toeing around each other at one point and then bam, everything happens at once. Otherwise this is a light read, and perfect for a snowy day.
