Review: A Curious Tale of the In-Between by Lauren DeStefano
Pram Bellamy is special–she can talk to ghosts. She doesn’t have too many friends amongst the living, but that’s all right. She has her books, she has her aunts, and she has her best friend, the ghostly Felix.
Then Pram meets Clarence, a boy from school who has also lost a parent and is looking for answers. Together they arrive at the door of the mysterious Lady Savant, who promises to help. But this spiritualist knows the true nature of Pram’s power, and what she has planned is more terrifying than any ghost.

This book was positively captivating, delightful, and enchanting. I think any middle school aged child would be enthralled and hooked from the very first page. The story is completely unique and mysterious, and the mystery was what kept me turning the page. I wanted to know about Pram’s gift, I wanted to know about the sorrow in Clarence, I wanted to know about the evil that lies in Lady Savant, and finally I wanted to know about Pram’s family and Felix.
The story is intriguing and full of twists and turns. There was honestly a moment when I was completely shocked, and a twist I never saw coming occurred. My jaw literally dropped, I wasn’t expecting it but I loved the twist all the same. I really liked how the characters are developed and portray their emotions. Lauren DeStefano accurately captures the phase where children are truly feeling and being consumed by emotions. She depicts the struggles of emotions like grief and processing the sorrow with grace. These combine for a witty tale of death, life, and everything in-between.
