Review: Raising the Phoenix by Emma Nichols
SYNOPSIS:
The Alpha is the leader of the pack, a revered position, one that can’t be inherited, only earned. For ten years my father groomed me to take over in the event something happened to him. I guess I never expected it to happen so soon. I thought I’d have more time. I thought I’d at least graduate from college first. Instead, life threw the Phoenix Pack a curveball. My father was murdered, and my mother died with him. Suddenly, I’m responsible for my twin sisters, and everyone else. I’m forced to make some tough decisions. And if everyone in the pack has their way, one of those decisions will involve finding my mate. They should’ve given me an easier task, like brokering world peace or curing cancer. After all, what male would ever volunteer for this, having a mate who’s also his Alpha, leaving his pack to join hers, and giving up everything he has ever known?
REVIEW:
Finally, a shifter book I can get behind. I really enjoyed this story, it was a quick read that left a smile on my face and me begging for more. I am dying to know what is going to happen next, so you can bet that I will be picking up the next book as soon as possible. There is plenty of drama, tension, and mystery floating around in this story. I adored the determination and fierceness of Savvy and her sisters balance out her character flawlessly. I adored and swooned after Quinn, even though I guessed the “plot twist” super early in the book.
While I would have like a more fluid transition in the emotions of the character, I also understand that the author was going for an instantaneous wolf to wolf attraction. The characters, when humans, seem to have knee-jerk reactions and emotions. In addition, I would have liked to see some mourning from any one in the pack over Savvy parents…Savvy included. The death sort of seemed as an aftereffect domino fall that is the catalyst to the story line. Overall tho, definitely worth a quick read and I will be anxiously picking up book 2 now.
