Review: Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
Mercedes Thompson, aka Mercy, is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy’s next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she’s fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy’s connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water…
REVIEW:
I have been on a major shifter binge lately but finding shifter books outside of the YA genre has proved a difficult challenge. So I reached out to two of my good blogger friends who I know would not steer me wrong. The both recommended this series, and even though this cover is less than desirable, I listened and trusted them. I also had to remind myself that this series is 10 books long and that this first book was going to be laying the foundation for the rest, so the romance was minimal at best.
But while this book lack romance, which bothered me for about the first 32% of the story, then past that point I was so captivated by the plot, I wasn’t complaining or thinking about putting the book down for the lack of romance. The story line had completely ensnared me and I wanted to know what was going to happen, there was so much drama and tension that I couldn’t put the book down. It was unpredictable, kept me on my toes, and had me fixated on what was going to possible happen next.
The book is rich and diverse in its paranormal roots, branching into all types of paranormal beings and a mixture of classic rules with unique new ones. I also really appreciated the unique aspect of Mercy. This combined flawlessly with her stubborn, determined, bad-*ss attitude. She was so strong and defiant…honestly I don’t know how you couldn’t like her as a character. I am 100% here to ship the Alpha for obvious reasons so I am hoping this develops into something more down the line. But I definitely enjoyed this book and will be starting its sequel soon!
