Review: Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs
Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, never knows what the day – or night – may bring in a world where “witches, vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters live beside ordinary people” (Booklist). But she is about to learn that while some secrets are dangerous whose who seek them are just plain deadly…
Mercy is smart enough to realize that when it comes to the magical fae, the less you know, the better. But you can’t always get what you want. When she attempts to return a powerful fae she previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down.
It seems the book contains secrets – and the fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn’t take enough of Mercy’s attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side – leaving Mercy to cover for him lest his own father declare Samuel’s life forfeit.
All in all, Mercy has had better days. And if she isn’t careful, she may not have many more…
REVIEW:
I must have the patience of a saint because I wait 5 books for one scene…yeah we all know what I am talking about! Overall, I enjoyed Silver Borne, Patricia Briggs does an excellent job at writing action and adventure that can carry a story. Unfortunately, for those of us who love some romance, it seems to always take a back seat *sigh*. Mercy can’t seem to catch a break, which I feel is a line I write in each review of this series…which is sad that this series is becoming somewhat repetitious. Something crazy happens with the fae or vampires, Mercy is in the middle, and Adam is almost always injured.
That is pretty much the story line for the last 5 books and while I don’t hate it, I want some flavor in here. In this story we saw Samuel lose it and almost lose himself, truthfully I think he should have died. Every single book cannot end with everything in a neat, little bow….they are werewolves, there are going to be causalities. Yet, it seems only the bad guys die and the good guys live to see another day.
As I mentioned above, the romance has been taking a back seat in all these books, and I would have really like to see it be a better balance in the novel. While I adore Adam and Mercy’s relationship, it feels rushed every scene they have together. Thankfully, they finally sealed the deal on their mating bond and even that was a little bit of a rushed let down. I will try the next book in the series but then that might be the end of the road for the Mercy Thompson series for me. I can only listen to so many variations of the same novel.
