This book has been sitting on my shelf for ages, I think I was waiting for the right mood and mindset to read it. Today was that day and I was delighted by this story. Such an enjoyable read that left me smiling and wanting more. While the topic of the story is absolutely heavy, the book was a quick, light read. It didn’t weigh too heavy on my heart and the ending left me hopeful.
Lucille has a lot on her plate, understatement of the year. While her parents are absolute trash, she is left balancing a job, bills, school, and raising her sister…let’s add in a romance too. Estelle Laure flawlessly captures the juggling act Lucille has going on while maintaining the reality which is the small town they live in. I was captivated and couldn’t put the book down. I had to know what Lucille was going to do next, how were things go to play out, would her parents come back, and what exactly was going on with the elusive Digby Jones?
Okay, I have to get this one quirk off my chest…what kind of name is Digby? I mean honestly, it reminded me of the Holes. But once I moved past the name, I couldn’t help but fall for his gentle soul, kind-heart, and endless green eyes. One other thing that bothered me was I didn’t get a description of Lucille until the end, so in my head I never knew what to picture for her. Digby is the brother of Lucille’s best friend and this type of romance blooming between them just seems natural and easy.
Honestly, the secondary characters in this book make the story. They are multi-dimensional and true to themselves. Kindness and generosity know no boundaries. While the book ends on a slight cliff-hanger, I really enjoyed how quickly I became invested in the story. This is the perfect little contemporary young adult novel that will leave you smiling.
