Blog Tour & Review: Dare You to Lie by Amer Lynn Natusch

SYNOPSIS:

When her FBI agent father is framed for murder, Kylene is forced to move in with her grandfather, back to the small town that turned its back on her, and the boy who betrayed her.

All Ky cares about is clearing her father’s name, but someone won’t let her forget the photo scandal that drove her away two years ago. As the threats gain momentum, Ky finds an unlikely ally in the rookie FBI agent sent to keep an eye on her.

Determined to expose the town’s hidden skeletons, Ky unwittingly thrusts herself into a much bigger plot. They thought she’d forgive and forget. They’re about to learn they messed with the wrong girl.

REVIEW:

*Book Received in Exchange for Honest Opinion/Review*

I’m having a lot of mixed feel about this book. Part of it is a massive information dump, we are setting the stage for a series filled with twists, turns, and betrayals so laying the ground work for a crime ring and the FBI requires some purge of information. But wow was it a lot to digest. There are so many overlapping storylines and everything seems to twist and turn on each other. I felt like I needed a whiteboard to map out the narratives to keep everything straight.

So lets start with the characters, I liked Ky but I didn’t love her. She had the tough girl persona and sarcasm down but there was just something missing from her. I didn’t fall in love with her and I wasn’t cheering her on, she just didn’t ‘go there’ as a character for me. She fell a little short. Now mind you there are a lot of characters, AJ is cute and sweet but he needs to let it go. Agent Dawson…ummm how old are you sir? Tabby adds the comic relief, and Garrett, well I am not sure what to think of him.

It appears that Ky’s photo scandal is some how linked to her father being framed? I am still not one-hundred percent sure as this was sort of laying the foundation for the larger story. Does Ky get answers to her photo scandal? Yes, but she is left with way more questions and opened an even bigger can of worms. I think as I reflect on the story what it is missing most is balance.

The transition between teen crime solver and typical teen with silly drama wasn’t fluid, in some cases it felt like Ky didn’t know who to be or who she was. She was dead set on justice but then she would reminisce about the past and be sucked back in. I think this is something that will improve with time. The mystery/thriller aspect of the story was captivating and I really enjoyed that so I will probably pick up the next book to see what all happens there.
