Review: Siren’s Fury by Mary Weber
I thrust my hand toward the sky as my voice begs the Elemental inside me to waken and rise. But it’s no use. The curse I’ve spent my entire life abhorring—the thing I trained so hard to control—no longer exists.
Nym risked her life to save Faelen, her homeland, from a losing war, only to discover that the shapeshifter Draewulf has stolen everything she holds dear. But when the repulsive monster robs Nym of her storm-summoning abilities as well, the beautiful Elemental realizes her war is only just beginning.
Now powerless to control the elements that once emboldened her, Nym stows away on an airship traveling to the metallic kingdom of Bron. She must stop Draewulf. But the horrors he’s brought to life and the secrets of Bron are more than Nym bargained for. Then the disturbing Lord Myles tempts her with new powers that could destroy the monster, and Nym must decide whether she can compromise in the name of good even if it costs her very soul.
As she navigates the stark industrial cityscape of Bron, Nym is faced with an impossible choice: change the future with one slice of a blade…or sacrifice the entire kingdom for the one thing her heart just can’t let go.
REVIEW:
I don’t know if I am emotionally prepared for this review, as this book gutted me and I am still not put back together. Nym loses her powers, loses her friends, she is losing everything and along the way, I was really concerned she was going to lose herself. Nym’s battle was so much more internal this book, the constant struggle to survive and try to live, the choice between good and evil, the choice between right and wrong. And in the end, I think Nym evolved and came out stronger. But if you are looking for the war and chaos, don’t worry there is plenty of that too.
While Nym has lost so much, she still has Rasha and Myles with her. While Myles actions are questionable at best, I find that I haven’t decided if he is good or evil. He just wants power but I fear he is not ready for the danger and responsibility that comes along with it. He is a wildcard and I never know what to expect from him. Rasha, well she really grew on me this book, her skills are particularly useful and I loved how they went around confusing people to extract information instead of brut-force.
But lets be honest because I am really here for Eogan and Nym…and this book EMOTIONALLY SUCKED THE SOUL OUT OF ME. I was weeping by page 100 and at that moment I knew this book was going to hurt in the worst possible way. I just want this HEA so bad and Mary doesn’t seem intent on giving it. I don’t think I can handle the next book, I have so much book anxiety!
The story is fast-paced, filled with plenty of suspense and suspicion, and sprinkled with glimpses of hope. The ending is another epic cliff hanger that I can’t deal with. THE PLOT TWIST! It was too much and so very unexpected. I just have a lot of feels. This book is so much more than an amazing action adventure, there is the magic of romance, the healing power of love, and the awe of compassion, I just adored it!
