Review: Make it Count by Megan Erickson
Kat Caruso wishes her brain had a return policy, or at least a complaint hot-line. The defective organ is constantly distracted, terrible at statistics, and absolutely flooded with inappropriate thoughts about her boyfriend’s gorgeous best friend, Alec…who just so happens to be her brand new math tutor. Who knew nerd was so hot?
Kat usually goes through tutors like she does boyfriends—both always seem to bail when they realize how hopeless she is. It’s safer for her heart to keep everyone at arm’s reach. But Alec is always stepping just a little too close.
Alec Stone should not be fantasizing about Kat. She’s adorable, unbelievably witty, and completely off limits. He’d never stab his best friend in the back…
But when secrets are revealed, the lines of loyalty are blurred. To make it count, Alec must learn messy human emotions can’t be solved like a trigonometry function. And Kat has to trust Alec may be the first guy to want her for who she is, and not in spite of it.
REVIEW:
I am having a serious love-hate relationship with this book. Let me first say what I like about the book. The story line is cute, I enjoyed how effortless the college atmosphere flowed. From the parties to the classroom, I felt like I was transported to campus again. The whole tutor to love-triangle troupe is a classic.
Alec was adorable, what can I say other than I love nerdy-guys. From the glasses to the hair to the brains, Alec just fits the nerdy-swoon bill. The secondary characters are colorful, playful, and complex. I love how they add another layer to the story and how their pasts intertwine in various ways.
But my problem with this story is Kat. Specifically the first 250 pages she spent being an insecure, hot mess. Plagued by uncertainty and extremely low self-esteem, I felt like I was attending a non-stop pity party. But my real issue is the last 75 pages or so. The ending where she turns into a self-centered b*tch. Oh I am suddenly a new woman, I deserve better, I am going to love myself. Girl, check yourself and get over yourself.
Alec didn’t need to apologize for sh*t. If anything you need to apologize for continuously acting like a child and avoiding any adult conversations. I am 10 levels of fired up over this. I have never seen a character do such a 180, great you finally have some answers and are feeling more secure. I am irrationally angry over how she wanted an apology but finds her behavior more than acceptable. She went from a pity party to a rotten brat, I loathe her.
