Review: Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller
There will be plenty of time for me to beat him soundly once I’ve gotten what I came for.
Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.
More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.
REVIEW:
This book was so much fun, an absolute delight to read. I haven’t read a YA book in a little over a month and this book was a cleanse and a pure joy, so much so that I read it in one sitting and already started the sequel. This is my first Tricia Levenseller book and honestly all I can say is where has she been all my life?! This is like Pirates of the Caribbean gender-bending edition. I was enthralled with this story and it is absolutely one I will re-read in the future.
Alosa is the female heroine we need, strong, bold, determined, conniving, vindictive, scheming and an over-all bad-*ss. Alosa’s whit, snarky remarks, and endless sass had me grinning throughout the story. Riden is her perfect match in every way, he isn’t afraid to throw Alosa’s sass right back at her and he doesn’t underestimate her. They compliment each others strengths and their banter had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions. While their kissing scenes left me a giggling, blubbering, blushing fool. These two are like oil and water at the start of the story but they really mix over the course of the book and I was here. for. it!
The plot was fast-paced and action-packed. I was hypnotized by the unique narrative and the author didn’t shy away from the grimy, gritty violence we associate with pirates. The secondary characters enriched the story line and made things all the more complex and captivating. Lives will be lost and sacrifices will be made, all in the battle for power and ruler-ship. With countless plot twists, you are left wondering what side everyone is on, what is the end goal, and how in the heck is Alosa going to avoid death…again! This was just such a stellar read, there was never a moment where I was bored or wanted to put the story down. It was the perfect balance of scheming and romance and I loved every minute of it.
