Review: Fresh Catch by Kate Canterbary
Take a vacation, they said. Get away from Silicon Valley’s back-stabbing and power-grabbing. Recharge the innovative batteries. Unwind, then come back stronger than ever.
Instead, I got lost at sea and fell in love with an anti-social lobsterman.
There’s one small issue:
Owen Bartlett doesn’t know who I am. Who I really am.
~~
I don’t like people.
I avoid small talk and socializing, and I kick my companions out of bed before the sun rises.
No strings, no promises, no problems.
Until Cole McClish’s boat drifts into Talbott’s Cove, and I bend all my rules for the sexy sailor.
I don’t know Cole’s story or what he’s running from, but one thing is certain:
I’m not letting him run away from me.
REVIEW:
This was a super quick and cute read. I was recommended this by my friend who knows I love a good m/m but can only handle so much steam, and this book did not disappoint. Cole and Owen were a delightful couple who both found love and themselves over the course of the story. Cue the swoon.
I loved the contradiction that is Owen Bartlett. He is all rough and gentle, mean and kind, aggressive and big-hearted. His moodiness had me giggling up a storm. In comparison, I really thought that Cole found himself over the course of the story. He went from realizing that life expands beyond the walls of the office and there is more out there for him. Their relationship was a yo-yo for me, filled with lots of ups and downs, moments that had me recoiling and moments that had me cheering.
As I reflect on the story I only have a few issues, mostly being that the story line really had no substance outside of Owen and Cole falling for each other. I think the story could have used the support of a few substantial side plots to add drama. I found my mind drifting at times because I was bored with Owen or Cole. Issues were resolved quickly and the whole climax point of the story left me dissatisfied as everything was easily wrapped up in a bow.
In addition, there were a few scenes that I thought were meant to be cute or sexy but turned out to be absolutely cringy. I would give this book 3 solid stars, but it leave me on the fence as to if I would read another Kate Canterbary book.
