Review: A Kiss to Keep by Willow Winters
SYNOPSIS:
It started with a kiss. A single kiss that shook me to my core. A kiss to silence me, and a kiss to numb the pain.
I took his hand and in turn, he took me away. I thought when we ran away, we’d never have to look back.
I was wrong.
I think Sebastian knew, and so did I, that he’d be pulled back into this life one day. There was no way we could have gotten our happily ever after. Scars don’t ever fully go away, and this sinful place is etched into our flesh.
I don’t know how I’ll ever forgive him for bringing me back here. Even when he kisses me the way he does… no kiss can take away this pain.
He’s still my everything, but I don’t know how we’ll survive this.
REVIEW:
This was a super quick read from the Read Me Romance podcast this week. Willow Winters is a new to me author but the mafia genre is something I am familiar with and love. So I am having some mixed feelings about the story.
Lets start off with the characters, I really liked the give and take dynamic between Chloe and Sebastian. But I didn’t care for how harsh Sebastian was, up and moving Chloe across the country with no rhyme or reason is absurd. Not to mention does Chloe not work? How is she functioning as an adult, who is pregnant with no job, health insurance, and yep, lets just follow my man where ever he wants to go. I wish she had more of a back bone.
In terms of the plot, it was confusing. When I entered the story, I felt lost and like I was missing something. It’s supposed to be a stand alone but I could have really used the original book or a recap to get caught up on their dramas. The ending wasn’t satisfying, in terms of their relationship, the drama was worked out but I felt like the whole mafia thing wasn’t solved. It was sort of mentioned as a reason but it felt like a side plot left unfinished. There was still a lot of uncertainty about their future and the dangers lurking.
The female narrator wasn’t bad but I didn’t care for the male narrators voice at all. I especially didn’t like the plug that the author put at the end of the novel being like ‘pick up my other books’. It felt tacky and out of the numerous audiobooks I’ve listened to, I’ve never had an author do that. So overall, I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it and I don’t think I’d pick up her other works.
