Review: The Duke’s Twin by Lauren Smith

SYNOPSIS:

Rebecca Livingston has a problem: Her mother is desperate to marry her prettier, more talented, younger sister Lydia, off to the handsome Duke of Wiltshire but when Rebecca and her family arrive at the grand ducal estate it’s Rebecca who falls right into the handsome arms the duke himself. Rebecca tries to avoid the seductive duke but neither she nor he can keep their hands off each other. Her mother is furious, her sister is thrilled for her – but can it be possible that the duke wants Rebecca as much as she discovers she wants him?

Miles Beresford has a wicked reputation, but will do anything for his twin brother Justin, the Duke of Wiltshire. Even if that means assuming his identity or a week to suss out the intentions of some young marriageable chits fresh from the London season. But when Rebecca Livingston stumbles out of a coach and into his arms, he realizes that he might be in serious trouble – and that playing an imaginary duke to win her over may be slightly over his head. Does Rebecca love him or the dukedom, and can he bear to lose her if he admits he’s just the Duke’s Twin?

REVIEW:

Alright, I’ve said it once, and I will say it again, I don’t do historical romance…until now. I have yet to finish a historical romance, I usually get lost in the old age speak, bored with the stagnant relationships, and DNF real fast. But Lauren Smith has brought me to the light because I absolutely adored this quick, little audiobook and now I am over here considering giving historical romances a second chance.

While the story is quick and there is a bit of insta-love, I enjoyed it immensely. I love the sibling dynamic between Rebecca and Lydia and Justin and Miles. One seems to be the playful, rebellious sibling while the other is tender-hearted and kind. The relationships start off at a stagnant pace and quickly sky-rocket to sizzling. I was a blushing, giggling mess listening to the story.

The plot itself is full of enough tension and drama to seamlessly support the story but still allow enough time for the characters to develop. Things, while rushed…I guess they were rushed back in the day…flowed nicely and I never sat there questioning did they know each other. Rebecca and Lydia’s mother was a horrid hag who needed to jump off a cliff but she didn’t deter her daughters from their happily ever afters.

There was plenty of sexual chemistry between Miles and Rebecca and I loved how it was balanced with laughter and witty banter. These two just meshed so well together that it had my heart swooning. Seriously…I think I might go pick up another historical romance now, thank you Lauren Smith for redeeming the genre for me!
