Review: Heartache and Hope by Jay McLean

SYNOPSIS:

Ava Diaz needs saving.
She just doesn’t know it yet.
Just like she doesn’t know a thing about the boy she sits next to on the first day of senior year.
He thinks she’s a brat.
She thinks he’s entitled.
Maybe first impressions don’t always last…
Because Connor Ledger’s about to save her.
He just doesn’t know why.

Jay Motherf*ckin McLean is back! Wooooo, okay now that I got my excitement out of the way, let me reveal what should be the true title of this book, Heartfelt and HUGE EPIC CLIFFHANGER. This is Jay doing what she does best, tender moments, traumatic pasts, character depth, and playful banter. These components flow together to a crescendo that leaves me speechless and begging for more.

True confession, at first…I wasn’t a fan of Ava and I was worried I was going to spend the whole book annoyed with her. But after you learn more about her, you can’t help but feel for the burden she carries upon her shoulders. Life has not been easy to her and it really does tug at your heartstrings. Connor hasn’t been dealt an easy hand either but together these two are broken pieces that make a whole.

But even as things between Ava and Connor begin to come together, you know in your gut that this isn’t going to work out. Given their separate histories and their current burdens, there isn’t going to be balance, but yet I cling to hope and wait for the ball to drop. (The pun game is strong today…all intended!)

And that’s what makes me return to Jay’s writing time and time again. It isn’t the plot and the drama, it’s her ability to transport me into the world. I feel for these characters and connect with them as if I was growing up next door. I relate and feel like a member of the gang. I cheer on their successes and mourn their losses and with that I am on to the next book because how dare Jay leave my feels hanging like that!
