Review: A Scandal in Spring by Lisa Kleypas
After spending three London seasons searching for a husband, Daisy Bowman’s father has told her in no uncertain terms that she must find a husband. Now. And if Daisy can’t snare an appropriate suitor, she will marry the man he chooses—the ruthless and aloof Matthew Swift.
Daisy is horrified. A Bowman never admits defeat, and she decides to do whatever it takes to marry someone… anyone… other than Matthew. But she doesn’t count on Matthew’s unexpected charm… or the blazing sensuality that soon flares beyond both their control. And Daisy discovers that the man she has always hated just might turn out to be the man of her dreams.
But right at the moment of sweet surrender, a scandalous secret is uncovered… one that could destroy both Matthew and a love more passionate and irresistible than Daisy’s wildest fantasies.
REVIEW:
I was so excited to start Daisy’s book after reading about all the other Wallflowers getting their happily ever afters. But first, I was slightly horrified because who the heck was Matthew Swift. I won’t lie, when I originally started this story I was hoping Rohan would make an appearance but alas, no such luck. But Matthew did not disappoint!
Lisa Kleypas excels at writing happily ever afters and true love. Something that I find, I am growing increasingly fond of, especially when it happens in 18th century England. I love the language, mannerisms, and rigid behaviors that women and men of society must adhere to. I find it fascinating to read, it like getting a taste of a history lesson with a side of romance to keep my interest.
Daisy Bowman was a wild card for me. While she does possess the typical Bowman family traits, she doesn’t flaunt or use them, except when needed. For example, when Matthew gets under skin and she can’t back down from a challenge. Or…when push comes to shove and Daisy has to put her foot down on her decisions. It was just such a delightful read. Daisy went from timid bookworm to plotting seductress and I was here for it! She had me laughing out loud and blushing one minute and within the turn of pages, I found myself nodding and agreeing with her course of thought.
Matthew was a complete mystery and while I had an inkling as to how his story might unfold, I was still left in shock when everything was revealed. But while I greatly enjoyed Matthew and Daisy’s interactions…the real star of this book was Westcliff. He was giving me all the feels, from his tender demeanor towards his pregnant wife, to whispering sweet nothings to his newborn, to just being a d*mn good guy, he was my favorite character. I loved watching him grow and gain not only knowledge but love. I was just swooning watching his character arc develop and his protective care of Daisy had me sighing in contentment.
It was just one of those books and series that leaves you satisfied. I have no lingering questions, all the loose ends were tied up, but most of all, these women all found true friendship and love-filled marriages.
