Review: Missing in Action by Kate Canterbary

SYNOPSIS:

Former Navy SEAL turned covert agent Wes Halsted spent his days —and weeks and months —being someone else. But with his cover blown and his injuries requiring months of recuperation, he must learn how to be himself again.

Only …he’d rather save his issues for another day and get to know a stressed-out, suited-up businessman instead.

Tom Esbeck has everything under control. Meal plans, workout plans, project plans, five-year plans. A plan for everything and everything according to plan.

Except there’s no plan for a surprise—and shirtless—encounter with the built-for-sin spy he’d crushed on years ago.

But crushes —and spies —burn out fast.

MISSING IN ACTION is a full-length steamy contemporary romance standalone with strong ties to the Walsh Series.

REVIEW:

I didn’t know I needed a spy romance in my life, until I had a spy romance…and now I don’t know how I can return to civilian reads. Wes was everything I hoped for and so much more. After seeing vague glimpses of him throughout several stories and learning little tidbits about Tom, I was thrilled to see these two got a story.

I loved that the beginning of the novel, it starts off action-packed. Wes is truly one bad-*ss man. I loved that he was such a complex/rich character. All he has known for most of his life is how to pretend and when faced with his own reality and self-discovery journey, the transition was beautifully painful to watch. I was cheering for him while knowing that he was going to fail along the way.

In contrast, Tom was much of a control freak than previously thought. I loved the constant give and take between Wes and Tom. They balanced each other out. Tom seemed to instinctively know what Wes needed and Wes touched a part of Tom’s soul that he buried deep long ago. Through the vulnerabilities, the two fall and fall fast. Cue the swooning. I was filled with so much giddy elation and a little dose of trepidation.

Honestly I couldn’t put the book down. The characters are strong and stubborn. You get glimpses of the Walsh/Halsted clan from The Walsh Series. But what really sucked me in was the journey both of these characters went on. They found solace in each other while finding themselves. Tom is a pillar of support and gets closure on past traumas. Wes discovers who he truly is while showering Tom with the affection his heart so desperately desires. Just the absolute perfect match!
