Review: Fake Boyfriend Breakaways by Eden Finley
Breakaways is a collection of short stories from Eden Finley’s Fake Boyfriend universe. They all feature side characters from the series but do not contain fake boyfriend tropes.
Rebound (Fake Boyfriend 2.5)
Aron and Wyatt have been best friends since college and are both rebounding from bad break-ups. One night of drunken sex makes them question their whole friendship and what they’ve had right in front of them all along.
Best read after Trick Play in the Fake Boyfriend universe.
It’s Complicated (Fake Boyfriend 3.5)
Max has been in love with his childhood best friend, Ash, for years. The reason he has kept it a secret is because Ash also happens to be Max’s brother’s ex-boyfriend. Complicated doesn’t begin to explain their relationship.
Best read after Deke in the Fake Boyfriend universe.
Winning You (Fake Boyfriend 4.5)
(Previously published in Heart2Heart volume 2. This story has been extended from the original and re-edited.)
Marty and Luce win a blind date through a charity raffle. Marty is young and vibrant. Luce is older and a little bit bitter. In one night, they manage to change the course of each other’s lives.
This is a prequel of Hat Trick in the Fake Boyfriend universe.
REVIEW:
Rebound
This is a classic case of the author doing it right! Eden could have easily dragged Aron and Wyatt’s romance out but it was absolutely perfect as a short novella. I didn’t need a backlog into their friendship and when they had been friends for 8 years the transition to a relationship seemed effortless. They just worked together so well. And while Wyatt had his reservations and Aron had to prove it was real, they were just so stupidly cute together that it left a big cheesy grin on my face.
It’s Complicated
I totally called this book after meeting meeting Max in Deke. Max’s seemed a little too fired up over Ash to describe things as best friends. After feelings are revealed, these two fall into a groove. I found the whole need for Ollie to accept the relationship a little weird, it added a new layer of awkwardness. The whole Taylor situation seemed a bit unnecessary and ended abruptly. And I find that Ash can still be selfish at times, especially in the bedroom. Not a bad read, but I find myself indifferent to these two.
Winning You
These novellas were doing so well…and then I came to this story. So what was first off weird about this story is that we don’t meet Luce or Marty in any of the previous books in the sequel. Therefore I am not invested in these characters, they have no history together but spend a weekend together, fall in insta-love and you know how it the rest plays out.
BUT why for the love of all things good can authors not do their research. Marty is in a Ph.D. program for engineering, first off he would never take an entire weekend off, science graduate students live in the lab. Secondly, it is extremely unusual to get a masters degree in between your bachelors and doctorate, most people just go straight for the doctorate. And finally, third, he would never be allowed to take a year off from school and be able to return and just roll up into school and continue his research. NO RESEARCH PROFESSOR WOULD ALLOW THIS. Most graduate students in sciences are on stipends and have to teach during the semesters to get paid, you can’t just leave for a year and then come back and expect not be replaced or lose your position. And that concludes this rant from this science major…fin.
