Review: The Raven King by Nora Sakavic
SYNOPSIS:
The Foxes are a fractured mess, but their latest disaster might be the miracle they’ve always needed to come together as a team. The one person standing in their way is Andrew, and the only one who can break through his personal barriers is Neil.
Except Andrew doesn’t give up anything for free and Neil is terrible at trusting anyone but himself. The two don’t have much time to come to terms with their situation before outside forces start tearing them apart. Riko is intent on destroying Neil’s fragile new life, and the Foxes have just become collateral damage.
Neil’s days are numbered, but he’s learning the hard way to go down fighting for what he believes in, and Neil believes in Andrew even if Andrew won’t believe in himself.
REVIEW:
This story was absolutely insane…and I loved every minute of it. I am a mixture of ‘WTF did I just read?’ and ‘Can I have some more please?’ but fair warning; The Foxhole Court was tame in comparison to the gruesome trials the gang faces in this book.
So warning, this story is heavy, dark topics tackled such as rape, torture, anxiety, panic attacks, general violence and you name it, the story had it. Nora Sakavic dives in the deep end, she doesn’t sugar coat things, and each of these topics she faces head on with brutal transparency. They had my heart aching and had me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. I was so anxious about what might happen next, with the endless danger looking around each corner that I couldn’t put the book down. There is some derogatory language and a great deal of abusive behavior but I think this was Nora’s attempt to create flawed, broken, brash characters.
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom, okay there was a lot of doom and gloom but there were joyful moments too. Primarily the evolution of Andrew and Neil’s friendship? I don’t know what is going on between these two but the endless animosity from The Foxhole Court seemed to morph into something else this story. These two reached a sort of middle ground and I loved that they are slowly unraveling each other. Nicky is the comic relief and stronghold the story needed to lighten some of the tense moments. But the real star of this story is the team uniting as a whole. They finally start to come together as one and stand as unit instead of divided fractures.
There were some truly awful characters this book, like my hatred knows no boundaries for them. And the ending should be absolutely illegal. Honestly, I don’t know how this is all going to play out. The story ends on another level of chaos and danger. I fear for Niel’s life and whatever fragile truth he shares with Andrew. And don’t even get me started on Kevin…fingers-crossed he has an epiphany in book 3.
