Review: A Little Bit like Love by Brooke Blaine

SYNOPSIS:

What if you had everything in the world you wanted…except the man you’d left behind?

Jackson Davenport, the charismatic, strait-laced heir to the Davenport fortune, has a secret. One he’s been hiding since he graduated from South Haven all-boys academy—and that secret’s name is Lucas.

When a work trip takes Jackson back to his old stomping grounds, memories of the year he shared with Lucas come crashing to the surface. With growing pressure from his father to settle down and take over the family business, Jackson knows he’s on borrowed time, and sets out to find the free-spirited daredevil he once knew.

But Lucas isn’t the same man he was eight years ago.

One night. A shattered heart. And an endless parade of nameless faces. Lucas Sullivan is South Haven’s ultimate playboy, a reputation he’s honed since the only boy he ever loved left without a trace. To the world, he’s brash and confident, an in-demand artist who spends his days designing one-of-a-kind pieces and his nights as king of the downtown scene.

Many have tried and failed to get past the barrier he’s carefully constructed, but it’s the shy, studious boy he once coaxed out of his shell who still haunts him.

Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe it was lust. Or maybe…it was a little bit like love.

REVIEW:

This novel was a feels-filled, giggle-worthy delight. It was the exact type of book I was looking to escape into. This is how I would describe a second-chance romance done right, and I am so picky when it comes to these, so this is high praise.

Jackson and Lucas reconnect after 8 years of lies, deceit, and miscommunications, most of all done by an absolutely horrendous character who shall not be named. From the start of the novel, you know there is an ocean of hurt between these two characters, but the under current of attraction still lingers. Over the course of a week, these two slowly open up to each other again, overcome all the pain and torment, and find true feelings. I think the greatest thing about the story was the communication, there was never a moment where these characters pretended they didn’t spend 8 years apart. They discussed how they grew and changed as people and this served to further develop their feelings.

Now don’t get me wrong, this is after all a Brooke Blaine novel and you know there is going to be some scorching hot sexy times. But they were also well balanced with confessions and blunt honesty. Lucas not only has to become honest with Jackson, he needs to become honest with himself. And Jackson needs take hold of his life and his future. I loved how the characters grew with each other and as individuals.

Not to mention Lucas’ best friends, Shaw and Bash, who steal the scenes with their quirky, intriguing personalities. I hope they both end up with happily-ever afters of their own. But overall, the novel just had me sighing with content and left me with a smile on my face.
