Review: Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer

REVIEW:
I had to wait for the hype beast to die down before diving into this book. And I was glad I did, it is a story, for me, that is filled with so much nostalgia but yet brand new.
I started my Twilight journey my first year of college and it was a rapid reminder of my deep love of reading. It also made me wonder why I ever stopped reading when I was in high school. This series drew me into a world I love and I wouldn’t be surrounded by the friends and authors I am now if not for diving into this series. I remember when Midnight Sun was leaked and the devastation that followed when Stephenie Meyer said she may never return to it. But for me, this book was worth the wait.
We see Bella and Edward through a new lens in this story. It is amazing to see things from Edward’s perspective. His constant thirst for Bella’s blood and his deep internal battle between curiosity, control, and pure hunger. He was constantly testing his self-control, an endless war between his logic and his monster. His attraction from Bella seems to stem from his curiosity that her mind is shielded and things quickly grow from there.
Since he and his family don’t sleep, we see another layer to the Cullen coven. This story seemed to emphasize just how good and pure Carlisle is but amplified just how awful Rosalie was. I didn’t realize just how deep her hatred and jealously ran and this book was a startling revelation into Rosalie’s deepest insecurity. The deeper looks into the Cullen’s bonds were so endearing and served a reminder of how timeless this family is.
Needless to say, this story was exactly what I anticipated but more. I got deeper insight into the minds of Forks as well as the Cullen family. We got angsty, brooding Edward and clumsy, awkward Bella. But the shining star on this nostalgia trip was how deeply devoted Edward is to Bella…even as he goes and f*cks it all up in New Moon.
