Review: Found at Sea by Jaclyn Osborn
Kellan
They call me the demon of the sea. A pirate captain so cruel that not even death will claim me. They aren’t wrong.
Any humanity I once had is gone. I’m cursed. A curse that will someday consume me, unless I find the key to breaking it. Just when I’m beginning to lose hope, I meet an auburn-haired beauty in a tavern who captivates me like no other, and my cold heart starts to beat again.
He’s innocent. Pure. And I’m so very wicked. But I still crave him.
Fletcher
I crave adventure. Listening to sailors weave tales of their exploits makes me long to see the world as they have. But my life is ordinary. Then, pirates enter the tavern one night and press-gang me to join the crew.
I’m both afraid and excited by what awaits me aboard the legendary pirate ship. Captain Kellan Flynn is dangerous. However, he awakens a desire I’ve never felt before. The cold, hard stare he gives others softens when he looks at me.
If he’s as horrible as they say, why do I feel so drawn to him?
REVIEW:
Have I finally found a new-to-me author that I enjoy?! *gasps* Or is this just my weakness for pirates, either way this book was a delightful surprise. A complex plot line, fantastic secondary characters, a tragic curse, mermaids, magic and more had me sucked into this world. I loved the mystery and magic that set the stage for what I anticipate to be a fantastic series.
I think my favorite part of this book, aside from the world building, was the contrast between Kellan and Fletcher. Kellan is everything horrid you think about when you think of pirates. Ruthless, dangerous, deadly, short-tempered, but what can I say, I love a good redemption arc. In contrast, when I think of Fletcher, I think of the phrase ‘pure of heart,’ the man radiates goodness and no matter how many bad things life throws at him, he still finds the positive. These two are complete opposites, yet they fit so well.
The lore and world building were positively magical. There are prophecies, curses, seers, mer-people, mages, wars, dark magic, it was basically everything I didn’t know I wanted in a fantasy book. And the writing flows so effortlessly that I found myself getting sucked in so quickly I didn’t want to put the story down. As secret after secret is uncovered, I found myself craving more.
With the settings and endless action-packed danger, there were obviously some plot twists that left me reeling. At one point I almost stopped reading…if not for peaking at the synopsis of the second book I would have lost all faith. I think my only gripe is that I wish I had some more heartfelt conversations between Fletcher and Kellan. But I definitely am looking forward to exploring more of Jaclyn Osborn’s books.
