Review: Bitter Heat by Leta Blake

SYNOPSIS:

A pregnant omega trapped in a desperate situation, an unattached alpha with a lot to prove, and an unexpected fall into love that could save them both.

Kerry Monkburn is contracted to a violent alpha in prison for brutal crimes. Now pregnant with the alpha’s child, he lives high in the mountains, far above the city that once lured him in with promises of a better life. Enduring bitterness and fear, Kerry flirts with putting an end to his life of darkness, but fate intervenes.

Janus Heelies has made mistakes in the past. In an effort to redeem himself, integrity has become the watchword for his future. Training as a nurse under the only doctor willing to take him on, Janus is resolute in his intentions: he will live cleanly in the mountains and avoid all inappropriate affairs. But he doesn’t anticipate the pull that Kerry exercises on his heart and mind.

As the question of Kerry’s future health and safety comes to an explosive head, only the intervention of fate will see these desperate men through to a happy ending.

REVIEW:

This was such an emotional story! I mean, I was anticipating it a little with Kerry but it was so much more. I even fell for Janus over the course of his redemption arc because if you’ve read the early books in the series, he was the absolute worst. But I am not gonna lie, my favorite part of this story was the Caleb cameos!

The covers are still meh, but the world building is top notch. Each book in the story reveals a little bit more about how society is different in this omegaverse. This was truly the story of two broken people finding solace in each other. The beginning of the story is absolutely brutal. My heart ached for Kerry and the endless abuse he endures from his alpha and his alpha’s family. He escapes to the mountains and contemplates both suicide and abortion.

Over the course of the story, Kerry comes to accept that he didn’t deserve to be treated as he did but he also finds true love with Janus. Janus for his part is a completely different character from the toxic man we saw in Alpha Heat. Years of illness and near touches of death have left Janus plenty of time to reflect. In this reflection he decides to turn over a new leaf and really become a worthy alpha. He was so tender with Kerry and really let Kerry set the pace and have the control.

The conversations were so endearing between these two and try as Kerry might, he couldn’t deny the feelings and love between them. I was delighted when Caleb appeared and was still the pillar of strong steady support that both Janus and Kerry needed. I loved the little plot twist at the end that freed Kerry from his horrid alpha. And after all these characters both endured, I feel that they truly earned their happily-ever-after.
