Review: Breaking News by Ella Frank

SYNOPSIS:

Breaking News is the continuation of Xander and Sean’s story and should only be read after book one, Inside Affair.

Xander
Sean Bailey, the older brother of my lifelong best friend, has always been a surly, temperamental pain in my ass. But sometime during the last few weeks, I’ve gone and fallen head over heels for him.

Gruff and charming, charismatic in his own way, I’ve found myself looking past my preconceptions and discovered a whole new side to Detective Dick—a side I could fall in love with.

But life isn’t always easy—it can change course in the blink of an eye. Sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad. I know this because last night I experienced both sides.

I went to Sean for help in guarding my body; what I didn’t expect was for him to steal my heart.

REVIEW:

I enjoyed this installment in the Prime Time Series. After Inside Affair ended with a huge cliffhanger, I immediately dived into this story. While the first book was a slow-burn, this story laid and built the foundation for a solid relationship. Reeling from the trauma of the stalker situation, both Xander and Sean need to do some healing.

When these characters are finally free from the hospital and able to reconnect, I loved how emotionally vulnerable they were. And while intimate activities were tabled for a while due to injuries, the teasing and banter really helped get these men back into familiar territory. And once the all clear happens, they connect on a completely different level. Xander and Sean just work, their ability to read each other and connect on a deeper level was endearing.

Just when I think I have Sean all figured out, he reveals another complex layer of his personality. Like Xander, I find myself falling for this broken man who is so very lonely. By midway through this story, I just wanted to wrap Xander in a hug and whisper that it will all be okay, the man went through it.

In terms of plot lines, there wasn’t a whole lot. This story focused on dealing with the aftermath and really just giving Xander and Sean time to heal and build a real relationship. We do get to hear a little bit more about their shared histories and why everything wasn’t what it seemed when they were younger. I did find the ending to be a little bit anti-climactic. Bailey finally finds out about their relationship and his reaction was surprising to say the least.
