Review: In the Blood by Hailey Turner

SYNOPSIS:

Running out of time.

Captain Jamie Callahan is frustrated with his team constantly being at the mercy of the enemy in order to further the MDF’s goals. To make matters worse, his father’s political campaign is ramping up and Jamie’s every move is being watched by the media. He is acutely aware of all the eyes trained on him, his team, and Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan in particular. Meanwhile, Kyle would give anything to stay in the shadows, but he refuses to leave Jamie’s side, no matter the scrutiny. Staying out of the spotlight becomes impossible when their families are threatened and vital choices about their future together can no longer be ignored.

Desperate measures.

Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin and Agent Sean Delaney are enjoying their time together as a couple when Sean’s past catches up with him. As Alpha Team’s long-running mission gets derailed in the worst way possible, Alexei discovers the enemy is playing for keeps, and neither he nor Sean are in any position to beat the odds and win the game. As for Sean, he’s worried that even if they make it out alive, Alexei may never forgive him for giving into the enemy’s demands.

Stand your ground.

Manipulation is the name of the game, but Jamie is done playing by everybody else’s rules. So is the rest of Alpha Team, because if there’s one thing Jamie’s team knows? It’s that they’re a family—and you don’t mess with family unless you want to get hurt.

REVIEW:

Was I initially interested in this series for the romances? Yes. Am I now 100% invested in this enchanting, dangerous, action-packed world? Yes. Did this book still have scorching hot scenes? Yes. Did that distract from the suspense, deceit, and drama? Nope. Needless to say, I am obsessed.

The plot line in this book is so stupidly good, I was on the edge of my seat the entire story. The whole story was one step forward, two steps back for the good guys. Alpha Team is slowly being backed into a corner from all angles. The CIA investigation is ongoing, their tentative undercover positions are blurring lines with their realities, and the MDF is starting to become more secretive and not communicating with all of the team members.

But through the endless danger Jamie and Kyle are still rock strong. They find the time where they can to make their relationship work and the ending had my heart soaring. Not to say they didn’t have their moments of absolute danger because both of these men put their life on the live but Kyle truly showed what a bad-*ss he is in this book and Jamie finally picked his true family.

Alexei and Sean are battling some unexpected demons in this book. They are truly given the harshest of trials that will test their relationship. And honestly, it hurt to read these scenes. I won’t spoil the plot but my heart was aching for both of these men and the tribulations they were put through. They make it to the other side but both men are carrying scars and the ghosts of this trauma still haunts them as the story concludes.

As I wrapped up the book, I was left wanting more. I want to know how all this is going to play out and will we ever truly get some closure?! Okay, onto the next book.
