Review: In the Requiem by Hailey Turner

SYNOPSIS:

Never let go.

Weighed down by scandal, Captain Jamie Callahan must choose between saving his family’s reputation and his father’s political aspirations, or taking down the enemy once and for all. Choosing one over the other will have lasting repercussions he can’t escape. Whatever path Jamie ultimately picks, Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan will be right by his side to face the consequences. Kyle knows in a situation like this the only way out is through. Together they can make it to the other side, but surviving that journey will take everything they have.

One last chance.

Agent Sean Delaney is learning what it means to be part of Alpha Team through trial by fire. He wouldn’t change it for the world, nor would he give up the life he’s building with Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin. But their time together is threatened by outside forces they can’t outrun. Having put the nightmare of Boston behind him, Alexei is focused on keeping his family safe, but he can’t have eyes on everyone. Alexei knows he can’t ignore the danger on the horizon, and when it strikes, he is unprepared for the tragedy it leaves in its wake.

Risking it all.

The odds are stacked ever higher against Alpha Team, and outmaneuvering a precog is a daunting, almost impossible task. Jamie knows something has to give, and when it does, it just might break him the way nothing else in his life ever could.

REVIEW:

This book left me reeling. Honestly, I spent at least five chapters of this story sobbing. In the most gripping, tragic, heartbreaking installment of the Metahuman Files series yet, everything in the past several books has been building to this epic moment. Alpha Team takes on impossible in this story and will never be the same.

Let’s start with my favorite boys, Jamie and Kyle. I can’t get enough of these two, as their hidden relationship continues to grow and thrive, they tackle every hardship and face every challenge together. Their strength and steadfast love was inspiring and beautiful. Not to mention the deliciously raunchy sex scenes that had me blushing and giggling non-stop. Even Alexei and Sean have their moments over the course of this story. They too strengthen their relationship and take it to the next level, which had me endlessly swooning.

But the real star of this sci-fi military book is the endless action and adventure. An attack comes too close to home and Jamie will finally have his epic showdown with the precog. But there are sacrifices that must be made to get to the other side. Oh, the battle scenes in this book had my heart-aching and me on the edge of my seat, anxious to turn the page. The tragic loss of life during the battle, the endless violence from the worst of the worst teaming up, and the resilience of Alpha Team left me awe-struck.

I have never read such an epic, gripping, and emotional fight sequence. And after all was revealed, I was left with tears streaming down my face. Just bravo, Hailey Turner, bra-fuckin-vo. While Jamie is the fearless leader of Alpha Team, Katie shows herself to be the rock that keeps everyone steady. Ugh, just thinking about how everything played out has me wanting to rub my chest to ease the ache in my heart. Truly the secondary characters are phenomenal and I absolutely adore them all…with the exception of Jamie’s parents, they are still garbage and can go right back to the hole they crawled out of.
