Review: The Hunter and His Mates by Kiki Clark

SYNOPSIS:

As personal assistant to a powerful alpha of a large pack, there are certain rules Jamie has for himself to make sure he’s successful at his job.

First, nothing and no one gets to the alpha without his say so.

Second, schedules will be enforced for everyone. At all costs.

Third, a certain Enforcer with an enticing scent and scarred face is not to be stared at, drooled over, and/or daydreamed about.

And fourth, human hunters are never, ever mate material—no matter what their smiles or Southern drawls do to him.

But what if his own rules are preventing Jamie from finding something unique and magical and hotter than he could ever imagine? Because being caught between a grumpy cougar and a dangerous hunter was the last place Jamie thought he should be… but it might just be exactly where he needs to be to find both of his fated mates.

REVIEW:

Okay I have to be honest, I am extremely invested in this series plot, as a whole. I am intrigued by the storyline, the drama, tension, betrayal, and build-up to what sounds like an epic showdown/battle. So I continue to read the series, even though the covers are definitely not my favorite, and the romances are insta-love at best.

The romances in this book were kind of a hot mess. Drake and Jamie have been dancing around each other for months. Gabriel shows up and is suddenly interested in Jamie. Drake thinks he has some sort of claim on Jamie even though he will never act on his feelings. Then, Drake suddenly goes from hating Gabriel to loving him and they all live happily ever after.

The Gabriel and Jamie relationship actually had some progression, dating, and emotional development. But Drake is just a train-wreck, he is still trying to come to terms with an accident that left him scarred and damaged. Alone, he would never act on his feelings for Jamie, and instead the two just pine for each other. Gabriel’s meddling ways makes Drake want to claim Jamie. Drake is suffering from one part jealousy and two parts confusion. But the relationship between Gabriel and Drake was by far the most confusing, Drake spends 60-some percent of the story hating and loathing Gabriel’s existence. But within a matter of pages he is suddenly confessing his feelings and they are all in love?! It was very abrupt and lacked any transition.

Once I got past this instantaneous romance, Gabriel, Jamie, and Drake do balance each other out well. I think the fact that Gabriel’s scent isn’t revealed ensures that everyone’s feelings are true. In terms of the ongoing plot, I really liked the direction it’s turning. It seems like the Council is determined to take down the Kincaid pack yet with each book the Kincaid pack just grows stronger and more resilient. I am really looking forward to what secrets are revealed in the next installment.
