Review: Of Betrayal and Monsters by Alice Winters
Quinn
I thought pulling my pack away from Winsford would save us. I never realized how wrong I could be.
After Rowan and I escape Mercer’s hold, we have to get the pack somewhere safe, but my only option is a pride run by a controlling alpha. With everyone safely inside the walls of Winterhaven, Rowan and I attempt to search for the truth, but we’re being hunted and driven further from the answers we need. I want to do everything to protect my mate, but as I learn more about his past, I realize that I might need to protect him from more than just Mercer.
Rowan
I never thought I could embrace this other side of me, especially when I’ve always been taught to hate it.
But Quinn makes me feel alive and happier than I ever thought I’d be after shutting away a part of myself for years. When he’s with me, I feel like we can accomplish anything, and figuring out why Mercer is targeting us is only the first step. However, we could lose everything if we make a single mistake. One thing I know about my mate, though, is that he’s the most determined man I’ve ever met. And I’ll be right by his side as we bring Mercer crashing to the ground.
REVIEW:
I enjoyed every action-packed second of this book. As Quinn, Rowan, and the pack retreat to Winterhaven, what they thought would be a reprieve for them and a chance to regroup turns into absolute chaos. The plot while tense and dramatic were balanced with delightfully hilarious characters such as Ari and Emery.
Quinn and gang retreat after the first round of battle and I had a sinking feeling in my stomach as soon as we met Apollo (Quinn’s old alpha). But as the plot played out I quickly learned that things at Winterhaven were not what they seemed. Every time I thought I had things figured out, Alice Winters would throw a twist that had me reeling. You never knew who to trust or who was going to betray Quinn and his pack next…and I absolutely loved that. This endless suspense and intrigue had me turning the page again and again.
Rowan really grew as a character in this book, both sides of him. I adored the banter between him and Quinn. They still find little moments to make their own, even amongst all the chaos and danger. Emery was a surprise and delight this book with his dry, blunt sarcasm. I enjoyed the light joking and camaraderie that the characters were able to carve out, even as things in Winterhaven seem tense.
When the tensions all reach a boiling point and all h*ll breaks loose, to say I was shocked was an understatement. While some of the bad guys definitely get what they deserved, I definitely didn’t feel like the battle was over. And the story ends with a giant cliffhanger, confirming my fears that danger is still lurking outside for Quinn and pack.
