Review: Power Plays & Straight A’s by Eden Finley & Saxon James
FOSTER
“Look out for Zach and don’t hit on him.”
My brother’s request sounds easy enough. Keep an eye out for his best friend on campus and keep my hands to myself.
Easy.
Even if Zach is a quintessential nerd, who I’ve always thought was cute, I don’t have the time to think with my … stick.
There’s only one stick I should be focused on this year, and that’s my hockey stick. My goal once I graduate is to get an NHL contract.
The last thing I need is a distraction. On or off the ice.
Only, keeping to the rules is harder than I thought it would be.
ZACH
People confuse me.
And no one more than Foster Grant.
I’ve barely spoken two words to him in the whole time I’ve known him, but the second I step foot on campus, he’s impossible to shake.
I can never anticipate his next move. And whenever we’re together, my next move is a total mystery as well.
I want to give in to him, but that might mean coming clean about something I’ve never been bothered about before.
I’m still carrying my V-card.
And I think it’s time to turn it in.
REVIEW:
This book was an absolute delight to read. I knew this series would be worth the wait and as soon as I found out Eden Finley and Saxon James published the last book, I was read to begin my book binge session. With a charming plot, endearing characters, and hilarious banter; I couldn’t put the book down.
I think my favorite thing about this story was the character contrast. Zach is so adorably nerdy, awkward, and anti-social; he complimented Foster bold, outlandish personality so well. You wouldn’t think that these two would work together but they do. I loved every moment these two were together, it’s the type of story where the characters are constantly lifting one another up. Foster gives Zach the confidence and courage he lacked and in return; Zach gives Foster a safe place to be himself and not the hockey star. Now don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of swoon-worthy moments, but there is also some top notch jokes and laugh-out-loud awkwardness.
The story is a master balance in light-hearted playfulness, smoking hot sex scenes, and tender-heartfelt moments that combined for an amazing read. The secondary characters all add a layer of richness to the story. They inject humor and tension into the narrative but also make me irrationally excited for the rest of the books in the series. I even enjoyed following the hockey team throughout the series, would they win? How would the games play out? How would it affect the characters? This was a surprising layer of suspense that had me on the edge of my seat and excited to turn the page. It was the perfect escapism read and I can’t wait to dive back into this fictional world.
