Review: Pop Star by Eden Finley

SYNOPSIS:

HARLEY
What happens when the most successful boy band on the planet breaks up?

How about twenty thousand fans screaming my name.

But the price of fame comes with an increased risk to my safety.

I’ve been avoiding the dreaded B word for as long as I can, but after a close call with a rambunctious fan, I can’t do it anymore.

It’s time to give in.

I need to hire a full-time bodyguard.

And when he shows up, he not only screams badass, he’s another B word I try to stay away from: boyfriend material.

BRIX
Protecting people is not what my company usually does, but the boss knows I need money, and the pop star is offering an insane amount to live with him and make sure no more crazy fans break into his house.

I’m doing it for the money and nothing else.

He may be the prettiest man I’ve ever seen, and I may feel sorry for the celebrity life he’s been forced into since he was a teenager, but that doesn’t mean anything.

Just because he fascinates me, that doesn’t mean I like him.

It doesn’t.

Professionalism. I’m gonna live it. Breathe it. Enforce it … Mostly.

REVIEW:

I saw this series was finally completed and knew it was now time to begin binging it. I was pleasantly surprised with how well Eden balanced the endless dangers Harley faced with the budding romance. The story was the perfect balance of tension and hidden dangers with simmering romance.

I was a little tepid going into this book as we first met Harley in Hat Trick and he was the absolute worst in that story. But after seeing things from Harley’s perspective, the man is just fundamentally broken and lonely. Who he portrays is nothing of who he really is. In contrast, Brix shows up to protect Harley but has never even heard of Harley or his music. At this point you know hilarity is going to ensue. Even while a crazed fan makes continued attempts to get to Harley, it is balanced with Brix and Harley growing closer.

Brix gives Harley perspective and Harley gives Brix a place to call home. These two were so adorable, Brix is that alpha male who is really a marshmallow on the inside and it had me endlessly swooning. The way he took care of Harley was so endearing and had me feeling all the warm fuzzy feels. Brix also is carrying his own ‘secret’ but he eventually learns to share his burden. Both characters evolved over the course of the story and showed their vulnerabilities and there is nothing I love more than a healthy character growth.

I liked how everything played out, but at times the story did feel like it was dragging a little before the next blip of action. Almost every ‘attack’ by the crazed fan was followed by a lull of false security before another ‘attack’. These lulls sometimes felt a little too long but overall I enjoyed the story. Especially the adorable ending that had my heart soaring and me excited for the next installment.
