Review: Unexpected Turn by Ella Frank

SYNOPSIS:

Tyler and Connor couldn’t be more different if they tried.

One man is gay. The other is straight. Yet the moment they met in college they knew they’d be forever linked.

After years of friendship, growing pains, and heartaches, they have grown into two men, each looking for their place in the world. And when they head off on a road trip to a family wedding, they are stunned to discover that sometimes you find what you’re looking for when you take an unexpected turn…

REVIEW:

I knew going into this book that the romance aspect was going to be a whirlwind, especially considering the story is short but what I wasn’t expecting was the whole romance to take place within a several hour period. And I definitely wasn’t expecting cheating, even if some of the characters are truly awful.

Tyler and Connor are ridiculously close, Connor is straight and Tyler is gay. They have been this way for years and it works for their friendship. Until very suddenly Connor begins seeing Tyler in a new light. Connor’s bi-awakening wasn’t believable. The whole ‘I am suddenly attracted to you’ thing gave me whiplash with how quickly it happened. Tyler just foolishly agrees to all of it, even though he has never once looked at Connor in that light and has never let his mind go there.

But I think the biggest turn off for this story was the fact that Connor and Tyler are cheating on their significant others. And while Tyler’s deserved it because he was the worst, Connor’s girlfriend was a sweetheart and didn’t. After the they talk it all out with their significant others, Connor and Tyler decide they are in this…but what exactly is this? They never really talk about a future, how this is going to play out at the wedding, etc. Everything was very abrupt and I didn’t really feel closure or any substance to this relationship.
