Review: The Selkie’s Skin by Dani Olivers

SYNOPSIS:

The Selkie people of the ocean have been coming onto land for hundreds of years, some as seals, some as horses, some as wolves. But only Marin has ever changed into a human when he climbs out of the sea. And a human girl, at that.
Acting as a spy for his family, Marin works his way into the royal palace, where he meets Keslen – a prince who asks him to dance.

But Prince Keslen thinks Marin is a girl. How will he react when Marin has to return to the water?

Cinderella meets The Little Mermaid in this twist on a traditional tale.

REVIEW:

Every now and then I will stumble across a hidden gem on Tapas and that was the case with this story. I really enjoyed this unconventional tale, a quick read that left me wanting more. The story is utterly unique, starting with Marin and his one-of-a-kind skin. As he attends balls, picks up bits of English, and spies on the royal family; I couldn’t help but fall for this tender-hearted, kind man.

Marin was an endearing surprise and while I was concerned that the language barrier would be a crippling issue in this budding romance, it wasn’t. It’s a reminder that actions speak louder than words. Keslen was an adorably shy, cute surprise. He does subtle things throughout his relationship with Marin that show his feelings. As feelings on both sides build, the story reaches a breaking point; and when Marin’s true identity was revealed, my heart was in my throat. But Keslen is a better man than I initially gave him credit for.

As the story quickly wrapped up, we were given glimpses of a sweet, little happily-ever-after. The story was about more than just a quick, little romance. It was a tale of accepting yourself and being proud of who you truly are. And that underlying message made me glad I picked up this story on a whim.
