Review: Lyric & the Heartbeats by Lana Kole

SYNOPSIS:

A stubborn omega…

After years of wishing, Lyric’s dream is finally coming true. She’s landed her first tour when all her life she’s been told to settle and find herself a pack. Now she can prove that she’s more than her omega designation, more than the perfect mold her mother tried to force her to fit in. All she needs is a band.

Bruised hearts from broken pasts…
After collecting a talented team of musicians, Lyric’s dreams can come true. Living on the road with a band is a lot like having a pack, and fighting her own nature is hard enough without worrying about why these alphas watch her like circling hawks.

A pack of misfits…

Between four alphas and a beta who are as sweet as they are sinful focusing all of their attention on Lyric, her independence will weaken every day.
By the end of the tour, can she break down her prejudices and open up to the five men who would do anything for her?

REVIEW:

This was an okay read, I definitely didn’t love it but as it was part of the Sweet Omegaverse series, I wanted to read it to see how the books interconnected but also because I can’t read series out of order. The book started off super slow and while it does pick up, it lacks any substance to carry the plot.

I mean the first 34% of the story is so dry and boring, it didn’t contribute anything to drive the plot along nor were there any romantic revelations during this time. It was to the point where I was considering DNF-ing because again, I needed some substance here. Things pick up after that and the story isn’t bad, I didn’t care much for the repetition of ‘Lyric isn’t like other omegas’ after about the tenth repeat of that, we get it, Lyric is a magical, unique, stupidly stubborn unicorn.

I liked the progression of the romance once it actually started and how the pack begins to form. But Lyric was so deep in denial about her feelings, it felt exhausting waiting for her to acknowledge that she actually liked the alphas and beta. As she starts to form some solid relationships with her bandmates, Lana Kole then thought it would be a great idea to add another alpha at 60 some percent into the story. News flash, it was not a great idea… he was an unnecessary addition and way too late to add another relationship when Lyric was still bumbling through her other ones.

After that it was clearly a struggle for Lana Kole to find a balance between establishing this new relationship and nurturing the existing ones. The remainder of the story passed and like I said, it wasn’t bad but it didn’t feel fluid, the writing was clunky and I was drawn out of the story. Basically, the plot line lacked any drive, Lyric being on tour was the only thing progressing the story forward and Lyric’s dysfunctional relationship weren’t enough to drive it.
