Review: The Alpha’s Son by Penny Jessup

SYNOPSIS:

Max Remus couldn’t care less about finding his mate—unlike the rest of his fate-obsessed pack. He totally prefers hanging with his bestie, eating his dad’s steak sandwiches, and drawing in his trusty sketchbook.

But all that is about to change at the Blue Moon Festival—a summer camp where Elite Pack wolves go to find their mates. The festival is a right of passage for every teen werewolf, and this year’s festival will be one to howl home about. The alpha’s son, Jasper Apollo, is attending for the first time.

When Max finds himself inexplicably linked with the exceptionally handsome but totally jerk-faced heir, he’s forced to grapple with the unexpected feelings clawing at his soul.

If Max rejects his destiny, will fate’s bite be worse than its bark?

This book was everything I wanted and so much more! From the surprising plot twists that had to me on the edge of my seat to the undeniable chemistry between Max and Jasper, this story will resonate with teens and captivate audiences. A delightful read filled with the drama of youth, the burdens of being a werewolf, and the ups and downs of young love.

So I think we need to start with the amusing animosity and tension between Max and Jasper. It was an endless game of will they or won’t they. I want to almost classify it as bully romance but it sort of morphs into a misunderstood romance. Jasper is the tragic son of an alpha, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, a borderline abusive parent, taking care of his sibling, and desperately trying to prepare to be alpha someday himself. While he is rude, abrasive, and mean to Max, I don’t think it’s intentional…I think this is just one more cruel twist of fate in his life.

Max for his part is a breath of fresh air. He is so resilient and no matter how much Jasper throws around harsh words and tries to push him away; Max keeps coming back because he can’t stay away. Fate is certainly not messing around by trying to bring these two together. I just loved how effortless the story read, I found the book difficult to put down and wanted to binge read it all in one go, even if that meant staying up all night.

Outside of the intense budding romance, there is a little mystery and hidden danger lurking about. I was surprised by how all of this played out. I wasn’t expecting this but it definitely enhanced the storyline and added a necessary layer of drama outside of Max and Jasper’s budding romance. But what I really didn’t like was that ending. I don’t think I would classify it as a cliffhanger but I definitely need to know what happens next. I can’t wait for the sequel.
