Review: Finding Home: Claimed by the Vampire Alpha by D.J. Heart
Calder is at the end of his rope.
Sold by his childhood alpha to a monster who keeps him in chains and forces him to fight for the amusement of humans, he doesn’t expect to last much longer.
When a vampire attacks–lethal, ruthless and impossibly handsome–Calder accepts that his nightmare of a life is over.
But the vampire doesn’t kill him, and Calder is offered a choice. Go back to his chains, or let the terrifying vampire claim him for his own…
REVIEW:
I picked this book up for one reason, vampires. I have been in the mood for a vampire romance but I have apparently read all the good ones. I figured I would give D.J. Heart a try as I have never read them before. While the story wasn’t bad, the characters lacked any connection and depth.
The plot and premises are intriguing. Einar and Calder’s unconventional meeting was enough to pull me in. Then they quickly find and add Max, a witch who is terrible at being an actual witch but excellent at surviving. The three of them quickly divulge into a relationship, BDSM, Dom/Sub, you know the vibe. But the problem is, the relationship lacked any depth or substance. They were all practically strangers but there are no conversations of getting to know one another, the whole foundation for their love is shallow and superficial.
I wanted some heartfelt conversations but after these three get together the plot sort of fizzles and stalls out. I was bored, even the drama with Calder and his past alphas seemed out of place and just an attempt to drag out the story. The sex scenes, while sizzling, didn’t fit in the story. The only way I can describe it, is the incorporation of them was not fluid, it was almost as if the author wrote out the ‘drama’ part of the book first then went back and just injected sex scenes so they don’t fit the scene, setting, or mood. Overall, meh I wouldn’t pick up D.J. Heart’s books again.
