Review: Emery by Cora Rose
I know this is wrong, but I can’t help myself when it comes to him.
My mom deserves to be happy after losing my dad to tragedy over a decade ago. But her blissful new relationship comes with a catch.
His name is Emery, my new stepbrother, and he’s the most infuriating, impulsive, chaotic, and strangely intriguing man I’ve ever met.
I’ve managed to avoid him for a year, but then on our way to our parents’ cabin, we get lost alone in the snowy mountains of Utah.
That’s when pretenses and boundaries between us start to slip and fall away as we focus on survival. I begin to see the charming and sweet man he is. And maybe all the wild and ridiculous things about him that used to irritate me, are what make him truly perfect.
REVIEW:
I liked Emery but I didn’t love it as much as the other books in the Unexpected Series. I think the story fell a little short for me on two parts, one it was chaotic and two it lacked any depth. Emery clearly has a lot of baggage but everything in the story stays superficial and unbalanced.
What I liked, was the taboo theme continues with a step-brother romance. I loved how Emery and August got together, by being stranded together…the forced proximity trope is a beautiful thing. But August as a character is forgettable, he lacks any substance. I completed the book less than an hour ago and forgot his name, I had to look it up for writing this review. Then there is Emery whose baggage includes PTSD, sexual abuse, childhood abuse, abandonment, neurodiversity, and diabetes. Needless to say, it was a lot and I feel like Cora Rose didn’t do this justice and give it the deep dive it deserved. There was a lack of balance here and given Emery’s affinity for candy, it was no surprise his diabetes was constantly fluctuating.
I felt like things for this book were dragged out though. August’s entire struggle is not wanting to disappoint his mom. But this isn’t a strong enough plot line to carry the narrative like Cora Rose wanted it to. Overall, the romance just felt a little rushed and fell a little flat for me. Outside of the romance, I loved that we got glimpses of past couples and potentially future couples.
