Review: The New Guy by Sarina Bowen

SYNOPSIS:

My name is Hudson Newgate, but my teammates call me New Guy.

That was my nickname in Chicago, too. And Vancouver. That’s what happens when you keep getting traded. Brooklyn is my last chance, especially after my poor performance last season.

But I can make this work. The new guy knows to keep his head down and shoot the puck. The new guy puts the game first.

What he doesn’t do is hook up with the other new guy—a hot athletic trainer who lives in my building. Gavin needs this job with my team. He’s a single dad with responsibilities.

We can’t be a couple. My arrogant agent–who’s also my father–will lose his mind if I’m dating a dude. And my team needs me to score goals, not whip up a media circus.

Too bad Gavin and I are terrible at resisting each other…

Sarina Bowen can do no wrong when it comes to hockey and M/M romance. The New Guy was a delightful story, filled with character growth, surprising turns, and a sticky sweet happily-ever-after that had my heart growing three sizes.

I think what I liked best about the story was the challenges; Hudson and Gavin had to work for their future together. Hudson, my precious, closeted bi-baby, I wanted to reach out and slap some sense into him. From his over-stepping father, to his constant hot and cold feelings, the man is clearly struggling. My heart was aching for him and its clear with all his baggage and hang-ups he is going to do a lot of self-reflection and growth over the course of the story.

Then there is sweet, loving Gavin… I couldn’t get enough of him and his daughter. I am usually not a big fan of kids in books but Jordyn stole the scene and added some much needed tenderness and light-heartedness to otherwise heavy moments. I adored Gavin and Hudson’s journey together; their conventional meet cute had me giddy. Then how their lives are suddenly so thrown together and the lines start to blur. To all the heartache and trials to get to their little slice of heaven, it was so well done.
