Review: Diablo by Cora Rose

SYNOPSIS:Book cover for Diablo by Cora Rose, the seventh installment in her Unexpected Series.

After my honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, it only made sense to put my skills to good use as a personal bodyguard. The contracts keep me moving and traveling, and the money is good. All I’ve ever wanted was to make sure my mother and sister were taken care of after my father passed away. So when Anthony Costello, the notorious mob boss and my dad’s ex-employer, asked me to take on a special job for his family, I couldn’t say no.

But not even my six-year stint as an elite Marine could have prepared me for the hellscape that is being trapped in a secluded safe house with his son. Diablo Costello is a rude little chaos gremlin that lives to push all my buttons. I can’t keep him safe if he’s determined to fight me every step of the way. But I can see through the bratty facade. I know what Diablo needs. What he longs for. And God help me, I’m going to give it to him.

This book was sizzling, spicy chaos, which was exactly what I was expecting after meeting Diablo. If you are looking for something serious, this isn’t the book for you. This novel is playful, sexy, and slightly questionable at times but will leave you grinning in the end.

I think one of my favorite parts of this story was how dynamic Diablo is. The man is like a pint-sized onion; he has layers that are slowly stripped away by Skylar. While a lot of Diablo is a facade, the man is clearly looking for affection and while he may not be exactly ‘normal’ I like that he is able to define what his own normal is. He writes his own rules and constantly lies but thankfully Skylar can read between the lines and knows Diablo sometimes better than he knows himself. Skylar was a delightful, brick wall of a man. I wish we got more details on his backstory but he was the perfect counterpart to Diablo.

I would have loved to have seen a little better balance in the story. The first 50% of the book, basically until the first hook-up is slow at times. I wish we would have gotten some more depth during this time but it’s a lot of repetition of Diablo being a brat and Skylar praying for patience. Then the ending, where Diablo interacts with his family and grows some, I was literally begging for more. These moments were what the story needed and we hardly got any. Overall, I enjoyed the book and will definitely read the next one…but the pacing needed a little finessing here.
