Review: A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by K.J. Charles

SYNOPSIS:Book cover for A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by K.J. Charles, the second book in the Doomsday Series.

Major Rufus d’Aumesty has unexpectedly become the Earl of Oxney, master of a remote Norman manor on the edge of the infamous Romney Marsh. There he’s beset on all sides, his position contested both by his greedy uncle and by Luke Doomsday, son of a notorious smuggling clan.

The earl and the smuggler should be natural enemies, but cocksure, enragingly competent Luke is a trained secretary and expert schemer—exactly the sort of man Rufus needs by his side. Before long, Luke becomes an unexpected ally…and the lover Rufus had never hoped to find.

But Luke came to Stone Manor with an ulterior motive, one he’s desperate to keep hidden even from the lord he can’t resist. As the lies accumulate and family secrets threaten to destroy everything they hold dear, master and man find themselves forced to decide whose side they’re really on…and what they’re willing to do for love.

REVIEW:

I could not get enough of Luke and Rufus, everything about them was positively captivating. When I finished The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen and saw that Luke was the next book, to say I was thrilled was an understatement. The story was filled with mischief, deception, romance, action, and plot twists that had me eager to turn the page.

From a perspective of Luke and Rufus, they are positively delightful together. They balance each other well and build each other up. Luke is desperate for a home and his own identity, which Rufus helps him find. Rufus also helps Luke find some much needed self-forgiveness and healing. In return, Luke supports Rufus and doesn’t judge him for his flaws. I love the chaos these two unleashed on Stone Manor, they had me laughing out loud and grinning at my book. Meanwhile the budding romance was filled with tender conversations and sizzling sex scenes.

In terms of external plots, Luke’s appearance at Stone Manor is not what it seems. And while I don’t want to spoil it, this plot twist had me delighted. I was shocked and honestly didn’t want to put the book down. And when the rotten, spoilt, horrid bad guys finally get what they had coming to them, I cheered out loud with pure joy. Just an enchanting historical romance, the perfect escape read.
