Review: A Veiled & Hallowed Eve by Hailey Turner

SYNOPSIS:

Death is the last lover you will ever know.

SOA Special Agent Patrick Collins has lived a life full of lies, and it has finally caught up with him. There’s no denying his past any longer, not after giving up the truth to save himself from a murder charge. But truth alone can’t set Patrick free, and time is running out to stop the Dominion Sect from turning his father into a god.

Jonothon de Vere knows survival isn’t a guarantee, but he’s desperate to keep Patrick safe, even as hope slips through his fingers. With the future unknown, Jono will follow Patrick wherever he goes, even to Salem, where a family reunion reveals a bitter secret that was never going to stay buried.

With New York City under control of their god pack, Patrick and Jono must fall back on every alliance they’ve brokered to fill the front lines of a war coming directly to the city streets. The veil is always thinnest on Samhain, and what awaits them on the other side is the stuff of nightmares. For when it tears, all hell will break loose, and the gods will be summoned to face a reckoning the world isn’t ready for.

The stakes have never been higher, failure has never been so deadly, and the Fates have never been kind to heroes. Patrick knows that better than anyone—because everything has a price, every debt always comes due, and it’s finally time for Patrick to pay his.

REVIEW:

What an absolute rollercoaster ride this series has been. Everything builds up to this epic showdown; I laughed, I cried, and in the end I am left floating on a cloud over just how satisfying this book was. Hailey Turner truly did Patrick and Jono justice but my God, did she make me work for it.

At 19% into the book I teared up, this did not bode well for the remainder of the story. But the darkness won’t linger because Wade is there with the zingers for comic relief. At first I thought he was annoying, but the dragon has really grew on me over the course of the series. I forged on, knowing that things were going to get worse before they get better. Does Patrick have one more half cocked plan that goes to sh*t, yep. Is his maternal family a completely unnecessary side plot that I low key don’t care about, yep.

At 50% the book is a full blown war, and let me tell you, I was concerned. I still have to get through half this story and things are already this bad? The crew really shows up, Spencer, Nadine, General Reed, everyone gathers and I loved this. They all added so much and were crucial in this war. There were a lot of close calls and a few moments when I wanted to quit reading because my emotions were frayed. There were so many lil moments during the battle that left me with a smile and glimmer of hope. Shout out to Ashanti and Fenrir, I see you.

Now to the second half, so much chaos. Andreas is the f*ckin worst! Good Lord, I thought he was gonna be a one-off appearance but he is the gift that won’t die. And then Hades threw me for an absolute plot twist that I am honestly still reeling from. The final fight scene and moments, Lucien made my grinchy heart grow three sizes. Honestly, I adored everything about it and then Jono and Patrick have a moment and oh look I am sobbing again. I hope this review is as chaotic as this story made me feel. 10/10 would go on this journey again.
