Review: Cair by Eryn Hawk

SYNOPSIS:Cair by Eryn Hawk is a MM paranormal romance with spice, size difference, and soulmates.

Twenty-five-year-old Luca Elliot lives in a city divided. The humans and the supernaturals mostly keep to their own kind, but Luca—curious and desperate for work—crosses the border and finds himself employed by a tall, stupidly handsome Fae with killer horns. He should be intimidated, but instead, Luca is utterly captivated. Falling for the boss is a bad idea though, right?

Cair Haryk is only a visitor to the human world and, between his position in the Fae kingdom and a bargain he made years ago, he can never remain. He’s content with that until he meets Luca—his soulmate—and hires him to work in his high-end lounge. Cair tries to guard his heart, but fate has other plans and, despite his best intentions, he falls for the pretty little human. Hard.

Luca can’t enter the Fae realm, and Cair’s time in the mortal lands is drawing to an end, so while the attraction between them is irresistible, their situation is impossible. They can’t be together. It’s tragedy and heartbreak just waiting to happen.

Isn’t it?

REVIEW:

I want to like Eryn Hawk as an author, reading the synopsis, seeing the cover, the story literally has all of my favorite things in it. But for some reason, Cair dragged on and I found myself struggling to finish it. As this is my second Eryn Hawk book, it will also be my last.

So the recipe for the story should work. Fae, different worlds, fated mates, magic, paranormal; this is a match made in heaven or so I thought. But then the story starts off and the first three chapters are painfully slow. I assure myself its just the world building. Alas, that is not the case, I find myself putting the book down, picking it up, reading a few pages, setting it down again. Why am I not sinking into this magical world? I mean even in the climax of the story where all the drama was happening, I was like meh…*sets book down*.

And after finishing the story, I think I finally figured out why. Eryn Hawk writes this story as if you are an outsider, there is no substance. The characters are superficial and lack any depth. If you asked me to name five personal things I learned about Cair or Luca, I couldn’t. Luca’s mom is dead and she never wanted him to go to the magic side of town. That’s about all the depth we get, and I only thing we got that much because it was a plot point. This story reads as if you are reading someone’s summarized cliff-notes on it. Which now makes sense why I couldn’t get immersed and why I found myself bored.

Honestly, the longer I sit after finishing the book, the more annoyed I become. This had so much potential and it was wasted. Even the sex scenes didn’t keep my attention. How do you f*ck up sex? *sigh* Onto a different book by a different author to cleanse my palette of this madness.
