Review: Soul Eater by Lily Mayne

SYNOPSIS: Soul Eater is the first book in the Monstrous Series. It is a post-apocalyptic fantasy series featuring monsters and human men falling in love.

Twenty years ago, monsters rose on earth and began a new age of civilization.

One where humans live in military-controlled, cramped and dirty cities along the coasts, and the majority of the United States is known as the Wastes. A lawless, desolate and dangerous place, teeming with monsters that have claimed the land for their own.

Including Wyn the Soul Eater.

He appears every three years, making his way across the country and slaughtering humans randomly, sucking them dry until they’re nothing but husks.

I’ve only been in the military for six months, but now I’m part of a unit tasked with trying to stop and capture him. And when I’m the only soldier out of hundreds that the Soul Eater leaves alive, I realise that… something about me has intrigued him.

But what is it? What could a twenty-three year old guy from the south, with no one and nothing in the world, have possibly done to capture the attention of a death monster with horns, blackened fingertips and a face hidden in the dark depths of his hood?

REVIEW:

I’ve had my eye on this series for a while but one has to be in the mood to dive into a 7+ series and one that features monster/human relations. It was finally time to give it a go and I was delighted by Lily Mayne’s writing.

The story had everything I was hoping for; a desolate setting, great world building, character depth, and some surprisingly touching moments that had my Grinchy heart growing 3 sizes. Danny was not the type of character I expected, he was far more fragile than I anticipated. But that vulnerability balanced out the misunderstood harshness of Wyn perfectly. The chemistry between Danny and Wyn works too, things are not instantaneous and they seem to truly care for each other. The frequent miscommunications due to a lack of communication was slightly annoying at times but it doesn’t last too long when it happens.

I enjoyed how unexpected everything was, the real dangers weren’t what I anticipated and it added a layer of surprise to the story for me. It was just a great story to escape into and forget about the real world for a while. And I am positively looking forward to Edin’s book next.
