Review: A Ferry of Bones & Gold by Hailey Turner

SYNOPSIS:

When the gods come calling, you don’t get to say no.

Patrick Collins is three years into a career as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency when the gods come calling to collect a soul debt he owes them. An immortal has gone missing in New York City and bodies are showing up in the wake of demon-led ritual killings that Patrick recognizes all too easily from his nightmares.

Unable to walk away, Patrick finds himself once again facing off against mercenary magic users belonging to the Dominion Sect. Standing his ground alone has never been a winning option in Patrick’s experience, but it’s been years since he’s had a partner he could trust.

Looking for allies in all the wrong places, Patrick discovers the Dominion Sect’s next target is the same werewolf the Fates themselves have thrown into his path. Patrick has been inexplicably attracted to the man from their first meeting, but desire has no place in war. That doesn’t stop Patrick from wanting what he shouldn’t have. Jonothon de Vere is gorgeous, dangerous, and nothing but trouble—to the case, to the fight against every hell, and ultimately, to Patrick’s heart and soul.

In the end, all debts must be paid, and Patrick can only do what he does best—cheat death.

A Ferry of Bones & Gold is a 115k word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending.

REVIEW:

I have found the M/M promise land, and its name is Hailey Turner. But for real, I have a new obsession and a new favorite author. This book was everything I wanted in a fantasy read and then some! From a tantalizing romance, to rich, complex characters, to a plot with so many twists, I couldn’t anticipate what would happen next, I am in love. To say I am excited to dive head first into this new-world would be an understatement.

First, I need to start off with the world building. Hailey Turner has done her research and it shows. I was sucked into the mysterious world of the Gods, paranormal, and your regular cops and I was HERE! FOR! IT! Rogue cops, check. No one you can trust, check. Back up who wants you dead as much as the bad guys hunting you, check. But the real icing on the cake for me is the Gods! I have spent years playing Smite, a video game where you play as a God and your skills are based on the God’s history. For example, Ra has a sun beam ability. Hailey essentially took one of my favorite videos games and made it a book but so much better. I was living for the feuding Gods! Persephone is a bad b*tch while Zeus is out there with the zingers and I was all sorts of giddy at their dynamic personalities and interactions.

In terms of the romance, cue all the swooning. If you have talked to me at all over the past year, you know I have low-key become obsessed with male-male romances. But oh we are gonna introduce a werewolf and a mage into it…h*ll yes! Patrick is stubborn, reckless, and damaged. I loved how fierce of a character he is and how he is willing to sacrifice anything for those that he loves. In perfect contrast, Jono puts Patrick first. He is 100% yummy, alpha goodness and he isn’t f*ckin around when it comes to Patrick’s safety. Seriously these two were like a match meets gasoline and I will go down with this ship.

The story was a perfect balance. The plot was action packed from start to finish. You learn a little bit of history of the world and then all the current dramas and tensions that are going down. It is honestly unlike anything I have ever read…and that’s saying something because I read a lot of books! Honestly I finished the book and all I wanted to do was *chef’s kiss*. The ending is a happily for now, and while the story could go on, I am not dying on the edge of a cliffhanger. In contrast I am the happiest reader and can’t wait to find out more.
